Tays Clinic:
We are here as healthcare providers in the school setting. To name a few of our duties: we assess and provide first aid for injuries, attend to emergencies, dispense medications needed during school hours (**only with doctor’s orders and medications provided by parents**), and promote safety and wellness for students, staff, and visitors. We value education and will encourage students to remain in school or class unless they have a communicable illness that prevents them from attending school per KISD policy.

Clinic Procedures:
Except in the case of emergency, students may visit the clinic only after obtaining a clinic pass from their teacher. If a student contacts his/her parent/guardian to be picked up, or make previous arrangements, the nurse cannot excuse their absence. Students leaving for home from the clinic must sign out in the appropriate attendance office and if driving, parental permission must be given to the nurse. Please be aware that if your child has multiple absences from school and is not showing signs of a communicable illness, their illness may not be excused by the nurse.

Communicable Disease Control Measures

Katy ISD encourages all students to attend school every day unless prevented by severe injury, illness, or hospitalization. For the protection and well-being of all students, do not send a sick child to school; performance is generally lower when a child is ill. Katy ISD follows the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Center for Disease Control guidelines for communicable diseases in the school setting. To help control the spread of communicable diseases, the following health measures must be followed:

• Parents/Guardians must keep their child at home if the child has a temperature elevation of (100.0F or greater), is severely ill, or is known to have (or suspected to have) a contagious health condition.

• Parent/Guardian must keep their child at home if a child vomits two or more times within a 24-hour period, the child will need to stay home for at least 24 hours, without the use of suppressing medication, to ensure he/she is not contagious.

• Students with any diarrheal illness must be excluded from school until they are diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of diarrhea suppressing medication. Diarrhea is defined by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services as having 3 or more episodes of loose stools in a 24-hour period.

Students must be symptom free for at least 24 hours without preventive medication. For a student sent home from the clinic, at a minimum, the 24-hour rule will begin when the student is signed out at school

Immunization Requirements

Katy ISD follows the Texas Department of State Health Services recommendation for immunization compliance in order for a student to attend school. The law requires that all students be as up-to-date as medically feasible in order to attend classes. The immunization vaccine requirements for each grade level are listed on the Katy ISD website. Exemptions to the immunization requirements are allowable on an individual basis for medical contraindications, reasons of conscience-including religious belief, and active duty with the armed forces of the United States. Medication Administration

Short term ( 15 days or less) and long term (15 days or more) medications are sometimes prescribed for students to be given during the school day. In such cases, regulations governing administration of medication during school hours must be strictly adhered to by school personnel. Any natural and/or homeopathic products, not FDA approved, will not be dispensed by school personnel.
